Hawker stalls and street markets are gradually disappearing due to urban renewal in Hong Kong. The design is inspired by this local street-market culture and to vitalize the Tin Shui Wai neighborhood area through community place making. The new market, together with nearby urban landscape, is morphed into a nodal place for social, cultural and recreational events, provoking a rethink of how the street market culture in the past can be sustained in community through adoption of a new building typology. The inward looking passage, which is flanked with big and small stalls on both sides and semi-covered by a high headroom canopy, gives a hint of spatial character of the old Hong Kong street market.

The project also explores advanced technologies in Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) and Design for Manufacturing Assembly (DfMA) to fabricate majority of components in factories which respond to the strong demand of the local community as well as the pandemic. It does not only reduce the number of on-site workers and process but also the carbon footprint of the buildings. In result this market is able to be built within one year and serves the community with great success and welcome.
